Services and Responsibilities
The County Attorney is elected by the people of Pope County for a four-year term. The primary responsibility of the County Attorney is to prosecute all major crimes for the State that occur in Pope
County. This office also prosecutes lesser crimes in the County that occur outside of the city limits of cities within Pope County.The County Attorney’s office also deals with many civil matters involving the County, as well as advising County officials and Department Heads on legal matters within their offices. Also serves as Data Practices Compliance Official.
This office is involved in other matters such as child protection and child welfare cases, civil commitment of persons who are mentally ill or chemically dependent, collection of child support, establishment of child paternity, seeking reimbursement for County AFDC expenses, and prosecution of welfare fraud.
Currently, the Pope County Attorney’s office is considered to be part-time, thus allowing the County Attorney to handle private cases as well.
