Birth and Death Records

The Pope County Recorder’s Office has birth and death records from the 1870’s to present. Anyone can obtain non-certified copies of birth and death records, and must provide “tangible interest” to obtain certified copies. Tangible interest is a fraud prevention measure. The law restricts access to certificates that are used for legal purposes.

Certified Birth Record Application - Tangible Interest form (required)
Pope County can print birth certificates for most people born in Minnesota through a Statewide system. For birth records prior to 1935, the Pope County Recorder can assist you, although it may take an extra day to have the record entered at the State. Birth indexes for the entire State of Minnesota can be viewed on a public computer in the Office of the Pope County Recorder.

Certified Death Record Application - Tangible Interest form (required)
Pope County has access to death records of any person who died in Minnesota back to 1997 or any person who died in Pope County back to 1870. For death records outside of Pope County prior to 1997, contact the Local Registrar of the county of the decedent’s residence or death.

Records are open to the public for viewing during regular business hours.
